WESTLAKE DERMATOLOGY
This medical office building was designed to be an embodiment of the Westlake Dermatology brand, “the gold standard for cosmetic dermatology”. With its prominent location on Williams Drive, the building’s crisp modern form and clean, well detailed materials serves as a billboard for the WD brand aesthetic and quality.
The building is designed as a floating cube experienced from all sides handling solidity and glazing in different ways to offer privacy and modulate sun exposure. As one approaches, the framed glass street facing facade gives way to a balance of solid wall and glazing at the entry. A facade composed of zinc panels and long vertical windows, creates an unique composition viewed from the parking area, while offering greater privacy to the exam rooms as well as the neighboring properties.
The site is designed to balance the business needs of adequate parking and street presence with on site stormwater management, safe traffic flows, and tree preservation. The building’s design as a “floating cube” is further emphasized by tucking the stormwater detention pond beneath the building to save open space for planting and trees. The parking area was tucked behind the building to maintain the City of Georgetown’s desire for a Scenic Natural Overlay Landscape Buffer along Williams drive, while increasing queuing distance for cars to more safely enter and exit the site.
The composition of the building’s exterior rhythm of glass and solid is designed with patient and staff experience in mind by providing both daylight and views to the outdoors, while maintaining privacy and comfortable lighting levels. The building’s expansive glass facade provides daylit circulation paths to exam and treatment rooms. Tall thin windows provide connection to the outdoors from exam rooms without sacrificing privacy. The architectural focus on daylight and experience throughout the patient’s visit sets this medical facility apart and serves to elevate the impression of the Westlake Dermatology brand.
MFA has also completed unique buildings for Westlake Dermatology in Marble Falls, TX and Cedar Park, TX that express the WD brand in response to these local contexts.
